Interruption and Essential Virtues Found in 18th Century French Fairy Tales
I was reading alone on the balcony. Having the time of my life.
Then this girl shows up.
She sidles up to me, book in hand. She begins reading the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. We read unitedly in peace.
Then she starts talking.
"You know, Beauty is pretty but she's also nice. Her sisters are pretty but they are not nice. Beast is not nice at first but he becomes nice. Beauty doesn't like the Beast but once he becomes nice, she does. If you are nice, people will like you more than if you are just pretty."
So, in summary, her talking ruined my evening.
I'm joking. One thing my kids are constantly reminding me is how spontaneous meaningful parenting can be. Children find a way of creating the most crucial teaching moments, usually at the most inconvenient time. You cannot schedule in the raising of a child. They won't let you. Plus, do you really want to? There is gold in them hills.
*Side note-I also believe there is a significant amount of time kids should be ignored and/or moms hides in a closet with a bag of chocolate.
