Interior
My college professor once said that interior design is the greatest art form.
He was a film professor.
His point was that creating a home is by far the most influential and important work of art we can ever create.
The supplies need not be expensive nor the decorations elaborate. The intent is to create a space where each piece works in harmony with one another.
My house is not a home without my family but anything seems an easier task than keeping my kids in constant harmony. It's not possible or expected (though desired!). If I am to create a beautiful home, my first task must be to ensure my inhabitants feel at home. For my kids that means plenty of blankets to cuddle under, a corner in the living room to keep spare bits of cardboard for sudden craft projects and books in every room.
For me to feel at home I need space to be alone to think, quiet to read my books and plenty of blankets to cuddle under with my kids.
Clearly we don't always get what we want.
Together my family and I are constantly redesigning our home with our unique needs and through that process we are designing the interior of our hearts, trying to take the very separate pieces of one another and knit them into one great whole. There are pieces of ourselves we may need to remove that do not serve the other and other parts we may need to raise up to benefit someone else. We are still very much under construction but our work is yielding lovely results.
As a side note, it's also important to wear a hard hat around my kids. Just to be safe.
